Washington Huskies Officially Unveil New adidas Football Uniforms

Although we caught our first glimpse and gathered many of the details through a leak last week, the Washington Huskies officially unveiled their new adidas football uniforms on Wednesday morning.

As previously mentioned, Washington’s new uniforms feature an “Angle of Pursuit” font that mimics the 15-degree slant in the university’s iconic Block “W” and — according to a university press release — “represents the relentless pursuit towards greatness that all Husky athletes embrace.” The numbers are also dotted with sublimated rain drops, which is rather appropriate for a city in which it rains more than 150 days each year.

“As we look to the future, we wanted to infuse subtle, yet premium details that would connect the entire University of Washington community,” said adidas senior design director Todd Rolak Sr. “These creative storytelling elements became the ‘Angle of Pursuit’ direction behind our design, and this new theme highlights the iconic ‘W,’ what it means to be a Husky athlete and the next chapter of UW football.”

The new uniforms pay homage to the Huskies’ undefeated 1991 Rose Bowl season, particularly the lack of gold on the road set. There are three purple iridescent stripes on the sleeves that adidas claims is meant to convey the look of a king’s velvet robe.

“adidas worked very hard, alongside our staff, to strike a balance between providing exciting new uniforms for our players while also honoring the great tradition of Washington football,” head coach Chris Petersen said. “We’re excited to kick off the 2019 season with these new uniforms. We hope you like them too!”

The most notable difference from Washington’s last set is the lack of black on the sleeve caps and the contrasting indentation meant to replicate the infamous “jaws” of Husky Stadium — though it was more Nike filling in the mesh part of its Hypercool template rather than a design feature that remained when the program moved to the Vapor Untouchable template.

Washington’s helmets, including the purple chrome lid, remain untouched, while the pants are now devoid of stripes or the oddly shaped block that plagued the Huskies’ uniforms since 2014.

Washington began its 10-year, $119 million partnership with adidas on July 1, ending its 20-year pact with Nike. And with that, the Huskies will wear “thoughtful, but eye-catching” alternate uniforms once or twice each year starting in 2020.
