Just days before their final game in their next-last-season in Pawtucket, the Pawtucket Red Sox will play a game as the Fightin’ Quahogs. While a quahog is a regional term for a large, edible clam found in the Atlantic Ocean, the term is perhaps better known for being the fictional name of the Rhode Island city where the TV show Family Guy is set.
The name is fraught with significance: While Quahog, Rhode Island, is a fictional town, it is unabashedly close to Providence, which can be seen frequently during the show. The website Fandom identifies the three buildings pictured above as Providence’s One Financial Plaza, 50 Kennedy Plaza, and the Bank of America Tower. While the PawSox eventually settled on Worcester, Massachusetts, as their new home starting in 2021, Providence was long rumored as the team’s destination.
The team is promoting the night as “honoring one of the most popular Rhode Island food delicacies,” but the PawHogs (?) are clearly embracing the Family Guy reference with a cap logo that emulates the distinctive animated style of the show.
Pawtucket will play the first game of an August 30 double header as the Fightin’ Quahogs. Giggity.
