UNLV Rebels Unveil Throwback Helmet For Final Season At Sam Boyd Stadium

As part of a season-long celebration of Sam Boyd Stadium, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Thursday afternoon unveiled a throwback helmet that replicates the design worn by the Rebels from 1969-72.

UNLV played its first game in what is now known as Sam Boyd Stadium in 1971, but the Rebels are set to move into the $1.9 billion Allegiant Stadium — also the future home of the NFL’s Oakland/soon-to-be Las Vegas Raiders — in 2020.

The interlocking “UN logo” was designed by Bill Ireland, the first coach in UNLV history and founder of the Battle for the Fremont Cannon (rivalry trophy for the annual game against the Nevada Wolf Pack). He finished his five-year tenure with a 26-23-1 record.

The throwback helmet will be worn during the season opener against Southern Utah on Aug. 31. Kickoff against the Thunderbirds is set for 10 p.m. ET.
