As a way to commemorate the 150th anniversary of college football’s first game, Under Armour on Tuesday afternoon released throwback uniforms for several of its marquee programs that references a key moment in team history.
“We saw an opportunity to celebrate both the 150 years of college football and our school’s football heritage with throwback uniforms that will be worn throughout the 2019 season,” said Under Armour senior design director Nick Billiris. “Each uniform contributes to college football in its own way and uniquely resonates with the students, alumni and fans.”
For Notre Dame, that meant replicating the classic design of the uniforms worn by the Fighting Irish on their way to the 1988 national championship — which included a dramatic 31-30 win against then-No.1 Miami and a 34-21 victory against No. 3 West Virginia in the Sunkist Fiesta Bowl — though it’s worth noting the number font and monogram aren’t entirely accurate.
“With a perfect 12-0 mark and a national championship, the 1988 Fighting Irish team epitomizes what every team strives for each season — perfection,” Billiris said.
Notre Dame will wear the throwback uniform, which features faux-mesh numbers and will be paired with special gloves and cleats, during its Nov. 23 matchup with Boston College.
