As part of a partnership with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Georgia Tech football program unveiled “Cape Day” alternate uniforms on Monday afternoon.
“It’s a great privilege to have the opportunity to honor the incredibly brave young people that fight every day at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta,” Yellow Jackets head coach Geoff Collins said. “That’s something that means a lot to our entire organization.”
The onyx gray uniform — which will be worn when Georgia Tech plays host North Carolina on Oct. 5 — features a metallic gold honeycomb pattern on the sleeves, down the side of the pants and inside the numbers. A crest paying homage to Cape Day, an annual tradition in the local community, is prominently displayed on the back collar.
Throughout the world, children look up to athletes as heroes. But with this uniform, the Jackets honor the true heroes in the Atlanta community, the kids that are battling illnesses and injuries at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
While it seems like an odd color choice for a blue and gold team, onyx gray was chosen because of its historical ties to legendary Georgia Tech head coach John Heisman, who was the first coach to enlist a practice squad to hep the varsity prepare for its upcoming opponents. That unit was known as the Gray Devils.
“It’s fantastic to honor the history and tradition of our football program with a nod to Coach Heisman and the ‘Gray Devils’ that helped prepare his great teams,” Collins said. “The uniforms look incredible. Our players will be excited to wear them and recruits will be excited to see them and know that they, too, will have the opportunity to wear some of college football’s best and most innovative uniforms here on The Flats.”
The date on which the uniforms will be worn is also significant, as the game against the Tar Heels comes just one day after Cape Day 2019.
“We’re excited to join with Georgia Tech to put a fun new spin on this annual tradition, an event loved by our patients, families and the community,” said Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta CEO and president Donna Hyland. “We have a great relationship with Georgia Tech to innovatively help kids through our joint Pediatric Technology Center, and we’re glad to take their excitement about helping kids onto the field.”
