Although the Arizona State hockey program is still in infancy — entering just its fifth season of Division I play this fall — the Sun Devils have quickly become one of the sport’s most recognizable teams.
Over the last six months, Arizona State has qualified for its first NCAA Tournament, secured a commitment from the son of longtime Arizona Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets captain Shane Doan and won the inaugural Renaissance Cup (Fu Xing Cup) in China.
Then, on Thursday afternoon, the Sun Devils enlisted Toronto Maple Leafs center and Scottsdale native Auston Matthews to help unveil their new adidas “Gold Hertiage” jerseys.
The gold sweaters prominently display the school name across the chest and features the same striping pattern on the body and sleeves as Arizona State’s black alternate jerseys. The look is complete with a contrasting maroon collar with “Forks Up” inscribed on the inside, a state-shaped captain’s patch on the left shoulder and the university’s pitchfork logo inside another state outline on the back.
Arizona State will wear its new gold threads — which will make their on-ice debut during the Sun Devils’ season opener against Mercyhurst University on Oct. 5. — with a maroon helmet, maroon pants and gold socks that feature the aforementioned striping pattern.
