The Double-A Bowie Baysox will pay homage to their home state by taking the field as the Maryland Crab Cakes on Celebrate Maryland Night. Bucking the recent trend in Minor League Baseball, the promotional uniforms will not feature an anthropomorphized food item, but rather a pattern based on the state flag.
Crabs are represented on the jersey through an image-as-type crab claw for the letter C, as well as a screened illustration of the delicious crustacean on the front panel.
Despite being somewhat jarring visually, the Maryland state flag, which is based on the coat of arms of Sir George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, is a popular motif in sports uniforms at all levels throughout the state, having been represented by high schools and universities all the way up to the Orioles and Ravens.
The Crab Cakes game will take place on the Baysox’s penultimate home game of the season tonight.
