Prior to the 2011 season, South Florida slightly adjusted the shade of gold on its football helmets to more appropriately match the fabric used on the rest of its uniform.
It was a welcomed change at the time, too, given the Bulls’ previous helmet appeared to have a greenish tint. But as the years passed, fans began to clamor for a return to the unique shade of gold.
They got their wish on Friday evening when USF broke out throwback helmets for its nationally televised game against Wisconsin. And though the Bulls lost 49-0, they at least looked good in defeat.
It’s unlikely this is a permanent change, as USF’s uniform announcement this summer included a chrome gold helmet. Maybe we’ll see them again this fall, though.
