Purdue will celebrate its connection to space travel and pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of the moon landing with brand new helmets for the Boilermakers’ homecoming game against Maryland.
The white helmet features moon craters in the Motion “P” logo, as well as footprints on the silver stripe down the middle similar to the ones Purdue alum Neil Armstrong left n the moon’s surface. The back bumper says “One Giant Leap” as a nod to Armstrong’s famous quote.
The craters are carried over to the front bumper and Nike visor tabs, which sit directly above a chrome gold facemask.
The Boilermakers will be outfitted in their usual all-white uniforms in an effort to mimic an astronaut suit. The look will complete with a stricter on the helmet and patch on the uniform that says “Purdue University • Cradle of Astronauts • 150 Years of Giant Leaps.”
The custom logo, created by the Boilermakers’ in-house design team, pulled inspiration from the griffin in the university seal.
Purdue has produced the 25 astronauts, the most of any school not affiliated with the United States military. With that, it’s probably safe to assume the numbers on the stripe are a nod to the two alumni who have walked on the moon and the 25 total alumni selected for space travel across 64 missions.
