Samford Offensive Lineman Changes Name To Honor Stepfather

When Samford senior offensive lineman George Grimwade took the field against No. 25 The Citadel on Sept. 28, he did so with a new last name on the back of his jersey.

The 6-foot-8, 313-pounder from Miami had legally changed his name to George Grimwade-Musto in honor of his stepfather, Michael, who married George’s mother, Michelle, when George was young. He’s been an important and influential figure in George’s life ever since.

“I changed my last name because my stepdad — which sounds weird calling him my stepdad because he’s always been my dad — doesn’t have anyone to carry on his last name,” Grimwade-Musto said. “He raised me since second grade, and I feel like I owe it to him to carry on his last name.

“I just want his legacy to live on forever. I don’t want it to end with him.”

George surprised Michael and Michelle with the news at Family Weekend, which culminated with a four-overtime, 61-55 win in the Southern Conference opener.
