This season will mark the 10th anniversary of Northern Iowa’s Ali Farokhmanesh hitting a three-pointer to seal a win over top-seeded Kansas on the way to an appearance in the Sweet 16, so the Panthers will wear throwback uniforms this season to celebrate the momentous occasion.
That said, the only similarities between the purple uniforms UNI unveiled over the weekend and those the Panthers wore during that NCAA Tournament run is the wordmark on the front of the jersey, with an arched “NORTHERN” above the number and “IOWA” below it. The block font is different, though, as is the traditional striping pattern throughout the uniform, including the waistband.
UNI wore a more modern side panel design during the 2009-10 season, so it’s somewhat odd Nike — which also sponsored the program at that time — couldn’t more accurately replicate the look, or that the Panthers themselves didn’t push for greater accuracy.
Northern Iowa opens the 2019-20 season campaign on Nov. 5 against Old Dominion. It’s unclear when the Panthers will debut their throwback threads, however.
