It appears East Carolina will break out throwback helmets for its regular season finale against Tulsa on Saturday (12 p.m. on ESPNU).
The Pirates’ social media account shared a photo on Wednesday afternoon of a matte black helmet with a chrome purple facemask and an old-school pirate logo worn by the program during the 1971 season. It is similar to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Bucco Bruce logo, with a pirate holding a knife in his mouth while wearing a gold bandana, gold earring and purple hat featuring the Jolly Roger skull and crossbones.
Several members of the team, mostly seniors, have been spotted wearing the helmet in practice this week. Head coach Mike Houston also wore a polo with the old-school logo during his weekly press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
This would mark the first time this season East Carolina has deviated from its primary logo this season, though the Pirates reintroduced black helmets to the rotation this fall, in addition to unveiling a brand new all-black uniform.
