The NBA today announced that every team will wear a memorial black bar on their jerseys for the remainder of the 2019-20 season. This black patch is being added in memory of former commissioner David Stern who died Wednesday at the age of 77.
The black band will be worn on all jerseys in each team’s rotation to the upper left side of the jersey, just above where the advertisement patch resides (Stern, I’m sure, would roll his eyes at the irony of that).
Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe today tweeted out this photo of the Celtics jersey with the black bar added:
Stern was commissioner of the NBA from 1984 through 2014, a span of thirty years. During his tenure, the league added seven expansion teams growing from 23 to 30 teams including the addition of two international teams in Toronto and Vancouver.
