Despite a push to wear their 1994 throwback uniforms in Super Bowl LIV, the San Francisco 49ers confirmed Monday they will don their standard road set (white jerseys and gold pants) when they take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 2.
The Chiefs, making their first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years, will wear their traditional home uniform (red jersey and white pants) in Miami, as the designated home team alternates between the AFC and NFC each year.
The 49ers have worn the all-white throwbacks with drop shadow numbers on two separate occasions this fall with favorable results, including a 51-13 win at home against the Carolina Panthers and a 27-24 win in Seattle in Week 17. However, league rules prevent teams from wearing throwback uniforms in the playoffs unless they receive an exception/waiver to do so.
It’s worth noting the Los Angeles Rams wore throwback uniforms in Super Bowl LIII because it was their designated home uniform for the entire season.
Kansas City is 1-0 when wearing its home uniform in the Super Bowl, defeating the Minnesota Vikings, 23-7, in Super Bowl IV, while San Francisco is 2-0 when wearing its road set, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals, 26-21, in Super Bowl XVI and the Denver Broncos, 55-10, in Super Bowl XXIV.
This also marks the first time the 49ers will wear their road uniform in a Super Bowl played in Miami, as the team wore its home set in a 20-16 win over the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII and a 49-26 win over the then-San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX. Both games were played in Joe Robbie Stadium, which has since been renovated and renamed several times to its current form as Hard Rock Stadium.
Kansas City and San Francisco have met seven times while wearing these respective uniform combinations, with the Chiefs winning five straight games including their most recent matchup on Sept. 23, 2018. The last time 49ers won a road game in the series was on Dec. 26, 1982.
Additionally, the Chiefs will be the first team since the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII to wear the Super Bowl patch on their right shoulder. The patch is traditionally reserved for the left shoulder, but will be pushed to the other side in favor of the Lamar Hunt AFL patch, which as been a permanent fixture on Kansas City’s uniforms since 2008.
Kickoff of Super Bowl LIV is set for 6:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
