Tampa Bay Buccaneers Unveil New Uniforms

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday afternoon unveiled new uniforms that harken back to their win in Super Bowl XXXVII, and also introduced an all-pewter Color Rush set into the rotation.

“This new but familiar look is a direct result of the valuable feedback we received from our fans,” co-chairman Edward Glazer said in a statement. “We are excited to return to our classic Super Bowl-era uniforms while also introducing a sleek Color Rush uniform that showcases our signature pewter in a new and dramatic way. The refreshed classic design of our home and away combinations bridges our past with our exciting new future, and we are confident it will resonate with our fans.”

The new uniforms are almost an exact replica of the Super Bowl set, with a hint of orange in the numbers and pants stripes, and mark a significant departure from the modernized set the Buccaneers introduced in 2014, which included a custom number font and the first chrome facemask in the NFL.

Tampa Bay did keep the oversized helmet logo from the previous set, but scaled it down a little bit and swapped the chrome facemask for a black facemask. The Buccaneers are also returning to darker shades of red and orange red, though the shade of pewter remains the same since today’s materials make it difficult to reproduce the metallic pants worn from 1997-2003.

As mentioned, Tampa Bay now has three different jerseys — red, white and pewter — that can be paired with either pewter or white pants. The jerseys are heavily simplified when compared to the previous set, with a contrasting block number font outlined in orange and black, a black Buccaneers wordmark on the chest and the team’s secondary ship logo on the sleeves.

There is a notable lack of orange and black in the all-pewter set, which features white numbers outlined in red and a red-white-red stripe down the pants, giving the team three different pairs of pants, as well. The Buccaneers wordmark on the chest is also red.

Although a minor detail, Tampa Bay also fixed an issue with its secondary logo. The ship introduced with the 2014 rebrand had the mast on the stern of the ship in front of the sail, and it was correctly moved behind the sail with today’s update. The ship also now features black sails on the home red jersey and road white jersey, mimicking the look on the sleeves of their Super Bowl-era set.

“When I first put it on, I just thought about all the greatness that happened in these uniforms,” linebacker Lavonte David said during the uniform photoshoot. “I think everybody will like them when they hit the field.”

The Buccaneers also updated to Nike’s Vapor Untouchable template after being one of the last few remaining holdouts to wear the Elite 51 template, which was introduced when Nike purchased the NFL contract ahead of the 2012 season.
