New Splash Guards Could Help Prevent Spread of Saliva, Sweat in Football

The world is starting to figure out what will constitute the “new normal” following the lockdown portion of the COVID-19 pandemic. Of course, the sports world is no different.

With football seasons quickly approaching all across the country, one company has a possible solution… splash shields.

What’s a splash shield?

It’s a transparent barrier that attaches directly to cover the player’s entire facemask. The intended purpose is to prevent as much saliva or sweat as possible that may be expelled by a player onto another during a game. It seems like something which will be extremely necessary in our new world.

Schutt Sports, who manufactures the helmet worn by more than a third of all active NFL players, says their new splash shield “will offer some protection for football players from harmful droplets caused by talking, sneezing and coughing in close proximity” and fits “all configurations of football helmets”.

“We need sports to return and this new product will help players in that regard,” said Kip Meyer, general manager for Schutt Sports in the company press release. “We are excited to introduce a product that benefits the players, the industry and ultimately, the fans.”

“The debut of the Splash Shield is perfect timing for teams all over the world, and especially in the U.S., as we are preparing to get ready for football season,” Meyer said.

Schutt is offering their full splash shields now on their site for $25 US, or $15 for just an upper or lower half shield. I’d have to imagine this (or an equivalent product) will be standard equipment across the National Football League if/when their 2020 season gets underway this Summer.
