Florida State Seminoles Unveil Updated Home Jerseys With White Numbers

Last summer, then-Florida State head coach Willie Taggart announced the Seminoles planned to bring back white numbers on their garnet home jerseys for the 2020 season. And though Taggart is no longer with the program, those plans finally came to fruition on Thursday evening when Florida State shared a video to its social media accounts of the updated uniform being unboxed at Doak Campbell Stadium.

The Seminoles moved away from white numbers as part of a department-wide rebrand in 2014, and both their home and road football jerseys featured gold numbers instead — though the latter was changed to garnet after just one game due to legibility issues.

The gold numbers were widely criticized by fans, who cited the similarities to Boston College’s primary look. One online petition to change the numbers back, which was started by Tallahassee-based rapper TaReef KnockOut, received nearly 5,000 signatures.

When Taggart announced Florida State’s plans more than a year in advance, the prevailing thought was that the Seminoles would be moving to a newer template, such as the Vapor Untouchable or Vapor Fusion, hence the lengthy turnaround. But a closer inspection of the unboxed jersey shows the same Mach Speed template they’ve worn since their 2015 Rose Bowl loss to Oregon.

Perhaps the coronavirus outbreak halted the production of Florida State’s updated uniforms, so the Seminoles’ equipment staff modified the uniforms themselves. If that’s not the case, the Seminoles will remain one of the few Power Five programs outfitted in the seven-year-old template.

Either way, we’ll find out for certain when Florida State and new head coach Mike Norvell open the 2020 season against West Virginia in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Seminoles will be considered the home team that afternoon, giving us our first look at the new garnet jerseys.
