The Erie SeaWolves, Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, will play a game in 2021 as the Wonders, an homage to the 25th anniversary of the movie That Thing You Do! The nickname comes from the name of a fictitious rock band from Erie, Pennsylvania, featured in the movie, initially called the “Oneders” (like the number one, so it’s pronounced “Wonders”) but ultimately renamed as the Wonders.
The jerseys reflect the ’60s-ish design of the band’s promotional materials used in the movie. (Fun fact about the movie: It’s the only one to include appearances by Tom Hanks, his wife Rita Wilson, his son Colin Hanks, and his daughter Elizabeth Hanks.)
There’s no word on a specific date for this promotion, but when it takes place I’ll be rooting hard for the SeaWolves’ opponents to record one and only one hit so that their pitcher is, you guessed it, a one-hit Wonder.
The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game.
