Fightin Phils to play as Reading Hot Dogs

The Double-A Reading Fightin Phils announced yesterday, on National Hot Dog Day, of course, that they will play some games next season as the Reading Hot Dogs. The team’s brand is forever intertwined with the encased sausage stuff, and according to their website, the Fightin Phils sell the most hot dogs in all of the minors, so it makes sense that they would adopt this particular food-based temporary identity.

The Fightin Phils’ primary identity features an ostrich, which is a wink and a nod to their famous “Crazy Hot Dog Vendor,’ Matt Jackson, who dresses like he’s riding an ostrich during games.

The team’s alternate brand highlights Reading, Pennsylvania’s status as “Baseballtown” and prominently features Bunbino the hot dog. (You can read all the details on Reading’s branding in our article on them in the Story Behind the Nickname series.)

The Reading Hot Dogs brand features mustard- and ketchup-based script (even though ketchup on a hot dog is an abomination and should not be allowed to happen) and an image of an actual hot dog.

The team will play select games in 2021 with the look.
