The Vanderbilt football program recently announced it will wear a new alternate helmet during Saturday’s game against LSU that takes a vintage logo and adds a few modern twists.
The glossy black helmet pays homage to what the Commodores wore from 1979-83, with a script “Vandy” on both sides. But it also includes gold flecks throughout, an illustration of the Nashville skyline on the back and a chrome gold facemask.
Vanderbilt associate athletic director Alan George said the Commodores will wear the helmet in three games this season, though he did not specify the other two games.
Vanderbilt’s home opener against No. 20 LSU is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network. The Commodores pair their black jerseys and pants with the new helmet, while the Tigers will wear their traditional white uniforms with a gold helmet and pants.
