German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are paying tribute to the city around them with their new away jersey for the 2021-22 season.
The adidas-produced kits were unveiled on Thursday, May 20. They are mainly black, with accents like the club crest, adidas logo and shoulder stripes, sponsor logos and sleeve cuff trim all in gold. The colours are a variation on those found in the Munich city flag.
Names and numbers on the back of the shirt are also in gold. On the back near the collar is the “Münchner Kindl,” the City of Munich’s coat of arms. “The emblematic figure of the city of Munich depicted on the jersey symbolizes the club’s ties to the Bavarian capital and is a reminder of the roots of the German record champions,” according to Bayern’s website.
The collar is solid black, and fine white dots divide the front of the shirt roughly into quarters.
The shorts and socks for this kit are both black with gold accents. The Münchner Kindl makes another appearance on the socks.
The Bayern Munich men’s team has Deutsche Telekom as the main shirt sponsor and Qatar Airways as the sleeve sponsor, while the women’s team’s main sponsor is financial services company Allianz (which also has the naming rights to the team’s stadium), with Deutsche Telekom moving to the sleeve for them.
Despite playing at home, Bayern will wear the new away kit for the first time on Saturday, May 22, when they host FC Augsburg in their final game of the 2020-21 Bundesliga season.
