La Liga side Athletic Bilbao are looking to light up the night away from home this coming season with their new away kit.
The kit is manufactured by New Balance and was released on Friday, June 4. It features a bright “green flash” colour, as the club’s website puts it, with black accents on the collar and sleeve cuffs. The New Balance logo, sponsor logo and club crest all appear in monochromatic black.
The kit is inspired by the San Mamés stadium in Bilbao, where the Lions play their home games. But the club’s website didn’t really explain what elements were inspired by the stadium.
“It feels extra special to be able to wear a jersey that celebrates the history of San Mamés,” forward Iñaki Williams said. “It will inspire us to play with even more heart.”
“San Mamés is an incredible source of inspiration for New Balance,” added Kenny McCallum, general manager of New Balance Football. “We understand the importance of the Stadium to Athletic supporters and wanted to pay tribute to that through the new unique away jersey design.”
Like the home kit, the away kit features a graphic on the back collar combining the Ikurriña flag and the club’s stripes. The Ikurriña is the official flag of the Basque Country Autonomus Community in Spain.
Going along with the shirt are shorts and socks in the same “green flash” colour with black accents.
Athletic Bilbao also released a secondary goalkeeper kit on Friday. The base is “light cobalt” blue with “cool blue” speckles.
Athletic Bilbao released their home and primary goalkeeper kits on Friday, May 28. The kits highlight the connections between the club and the Basque Country.
