Angel City FC on Cloud Nine After Unveiling Crest

The National Women’s Soccer League’s newest and perhaps highest-profile club now has a crest to go along with their name.

Since October 2020, the Los Angeles-based franchise with a slew of celebrity owners has been known as Angel City FC. And on Wednesday, June 30, the club unveiled its new crest as it gets ready for its inaugural season in 2022.

The crest depicts a pink angelic figure inside an almost-black (approximately 87% grey) shield with an angled top edge. The angel’s wings are also meant to evoke those of a red-tailed hawk, a bird of prey that lives in Southern California. One of the wings breaks out of the shield at the top.

“We’re doing something really special here,” said ACFC head of marketing Kayla Green in the Los Angeles Times. “The launch of this team is a true call to action to galvanize our community, fans, players around the world to collectively seek to raise the expectations of this game on and off the field.”

The club has isolated the angel figure from the centre of the crest for use in other digital and merchandise applications.

The crest was designed by Amedea Tassinari, a 27-year-old woman who grew up in Southern California rooting for L.A. sports teams.

“I was just sitting on some rocks next to a waterfall and there were hawks flying over me. It reminded me of home,” she told the Times. “A lot of it was things I think about Los Angeles. The feeling I have as an L.A. sports fan, as a a female athlete, employee, etc.”

The club’s colours of dark grey (“Asphalt”), light grey (“Armour”) and pink (“Sol Rosa”) were settled on in late 2020, and each one represents specific club values.

While kits were not unveiled at the same time as the logo on Wednesday, several pieces of Nike-manufactured merchandise featuring the logo are available for sale on the team’s website.

Angel City FC will begin playing in the NWSL in spring 2022. They will play their home games at Banc of California Stadium, which they’ll share with Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Football Club.
