In an effort to create consistency on uniforms and allow for more decipherable patches, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel recently updated a rule related to the size of uniform patches.
The changes – which go into effect for the upcoming season – allow for conference, institutional, commemorative, memorial and social justice patches up to four square inches in all sports except football and swimming/diving, where patches cannot exceed 16 and nine square inches, respectively. The previous maximum allowable size was 2¼ square inches.
Patches are still required to be in the proper location of the uniform based on each sport’s rules, while the number of allowable patches remain unchanged. Manufacturer logos also remain restricted to 2¼ square inches.
