“Is this Heaven?”
No, it’s a uniform reveal.
The Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees today unveiled the uniforms they’ll be wearing during the upcoming 2021 MLB at Field of Dreams game scheduled for Thursday, August 12th in the vast cornfields of Dyersville, Iowa.
Chicago, the designated home team for the event, will wear uniforms based off of what they wore in 1919 (also what was worn in the Field of Dreams film). A vintage white-crowned cap with navy blue pinstripes with a navy blue visor, the jersey is this same vintage white with similar pinstripes and the SOX logo of the era on the left chest in navy blue. A single navy blue stripe at each sleeve.
The White Sox cap is logoless for the game (as is historically accurate), but the league has created an alternate cap option for fans who’d prefer a logo on theirs, navy blue with the “SOX” logo in white which will be worn by the players only during batting practice.
New York counters with a version of their 1919 road set. Navy blue cap with a wider, larger “NY” logo on the crown, the jerseys are grey with no decoration outside of the plain, arched “NEW YORK” across the chest. No white trim.
The special ballpark in the cornfield created for the event has playing dimensions of 335ft down each line, 389ft to the alleys, and is 400ft to dead centre. There will be a manual scoreboard in the actual cornfield just behind the mesh home run fence out in right field. The bullpens, located behind the centre field wall, have been designed to resemble the bullpens at the original Comiskey Park in Chicago.
Field of Dreams is a 1989 film starring Kevin Costner, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones, and Amy Madigan. It tells the story of an Iowa farmer who hears a mysterious voices promising “he will come” but only “if you build it”. Mild spoiler alert, the farmer realises “it” is a baseball diamond in his cornfield.
