With UEFA Champions League football about to start up next week, it’s likely we’ll see a few new kits unveiled from clubs around Europe in the next few days. But while we wait for those, let’s take a look back and see what clubs in England, Italy and France unveiled over the past week or so …
LIVERPOOL FC – Third
Premier League side Liverpool have unveiled their third kit for 2021-22, which is made by Nike and draws inspiration from the club’s success in European competition. The shirt is yellow — a color “that was used on a handful of occasions from the mid-1950s and proved so popular that by the end of the 1970s, it quickly became part of the club’s regular alternate colour palette,” according to LiverpoolFC.com — and features subtle textured vertical pinstripes down the front.
The collar and sleeve cuffs feature a yellow-and-red checkerboard pattern, “inspired by the passion and energy of the Kop and the chequered flags that first illuminated the Reds’ end of the stadium at the 1977 European Cup final, which then set a precedent for all future big European nights.” (LiverpoolFC.com)
The shirt garnered the attention of the McDonald’s UK Twitter account, who subtweeted Liverpool just after the unveiling …
BURNLEY FC – Third
Premier League side Burnley FC and manufacturer Umbro are doing some good with the club’s third kit for 2021-22. The jersey is predominantly navy blue, with claret stripes running across the front shoulders and down the sleeves, and the club crest and sponsor logos in gold.
For every shirt sold, the club will donate £5 to the Alzheimer’s Society, which will be matched by primary shirt sponsor Spreadex.
LEEDS UNITED – Third
Leeds United are hoping their 2021-22 third kit, made by adidas, will lead them to a purple patch in this year’s Premier League. The shirt is predominantly light purple (or “rhapsody purple,” according to adidas) with logos rendered in navy blue and white. The collar, sleeve cuffs and adidas shoulder stripes are all white.
GENOA CFC – Away
With a home kit already released, along with a third kit depicting a famous city landmark, the last piece of the 2021-22 kit puzzle for Genoa CFC was their away kit, which they and manufacturer Kappa released last week. It is predominantly white, with a half-red, half-blue stripe across the chest. The club crest is placed in the middle of the stripe, and the red-blue split in the stripe matches the split in the crest. The trim on the collar is blue, while the trim on the sleeve cuffs is blue and red. Kappa logos appear on the chest and sleeves in blue.
OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS – Third
French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais’s third jersey, made by adidas, for 2021-22 is a shared effort between the club and another sports team in the area. The black and white paintbrush pattern not only features on OL’s jersey, but also on the away jerseys of both the men’s and women’s teams of LDLC ASVEL, one of the most successful clubs in French basketball. In June 2019, OL bought a stake in ASVEL, which is based in Villeurbanne, a suburb of Lyon.
Aside from the paintbrush pattern on the front and sleeves, the OL third jersey also features a black collar and white adidas shoulder stripes. The adidas and sponsor logos are white outlined in black, and the club crest is rendered in black and white. The back of the shirt is solid black.
