New Staten Island baseball team narrows nickname options

A two-month-long open submission process drummed up more than 2,000 potential names for a new Staten Island baseball team scheduled to start play in May 2022. From those entries the team has selected seven options. A new franchise in the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball will be called one of the following:

Harbor Heroes
Dragon Slayers
Ferry Hawks
Responders
Front Liners
Watch Dogs
Greenbelters

“We saw very heavy themes in our submissions on protecting and serving,” said Eric Shuffler, president of Staten Island Entertainment LLC, quoted on silive.com. “Five of the seven finalists really reflect the service of community and the heavy police and fire and frontline health care workers that are on Staten Island.”

The new team will fill the void left by the New York–Penn League’s Staten Island Yankees, a short-season Single-A team that ceased operations when it was left out of Minor League Baseball after the 2020 reorganization that reduced the number of affiliated teams from 160 to 120.
