If its official Twitter account is any indication, the Tulane football program will wear an “SEC Champs” decal for its game at Ole Miss this Saturday.
The Green Wave were members of the SEC from 1922-65, winning the conference in 1934, 1939 and 1949. They then went independent before joining Conference USA in 1996 and the American Athletic Conference in 2014.
Tulane athletic director Troy Dannen responded to the tweet by saying, “Show me more,” insinuating there’s more to the design of the helmet. And according to Randy Morgan of the Ole Miss Uniform Archives, that’s because the Green Wave will be using their retired mascot “Greenie” on the sides.
Greenie, which was Tulane’s mascot from 1945-64, brings to mind The Great Gazoo from the animated series “The Flintstones,” who interesting appeared just one year after the Green Wave moved on from Greenie.
That said, expect the flag to display Tulane’s Angry Wave logo instead of the T-Wave as shown in Morgan’s mockup below.
Kickoff between the Green Wave and Rebels at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford is set for 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The latter leads the all-time series between the programs, 43-28, with their most recent matchup coming in 2012.
