To mark the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo FC have teamed with a local visual artist to create a stunning training jersey.
The club enlisted artist Daniel Anguilu to create the jerseys as part of the club’s campaign around Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Anguilu drew on his Mexican heritage to create the jersey design.
“With the Dynamo, I was looking for an image that had different elements of what I consider to be home, within my understanding of this tradition of drawing and symbols from native culture,” Anguilu told the club’s website. “However, I also wanted it to be related to what the Dynamo represents to me — all this energy and movement.”
Anguilu combined three traditional Mexican symbols for the piece: a hummingbird, a sun, and a flower. He was also influenced by Mayan culture and street art in creating the artwork.
“My work is part of the ancestral tradition of creating art that reflects the research of our human relationships with energy. My work is a fusion of my culture and a contemporary approach to making art,” said Anguilu, who was born in Mexico City and usually works in larger mediums, like large-scale murals.
“I’m influenced by the information of ancient symbols and their appreciation of beauty that has helped me create a style that connects the ancient and the contemporary as one identity. In my collaboration with the Houston Dynamo, I’m creating artwork that contemplates the symbols associated with energy and strength.”
The club felt it was important to acknowledge Hispanic Heritage Month because Houston is home to one of the largest Hispanic populations in America.
Anguilu’s design appears on bandanas that will be given away for free with the purchase of any Dynamo jersey during Hispanic Heritage Month. The training jerseys with the design will only be available through an online silent auction that will run from Oct. 1 to 15. Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit Hispanic education in the Houston area.
