The Penn football program wore a new white helmet design during Saturday’s game against Lehigh that incorporates the Locust Walk, a pathway through the heart of campus, into the center stripe.
This wasn’t the first time the Quakers have donned white helmets, as they were first introduced and worn three times during the 2018 season. However, that design included a standard red and blue stripe down the center, whereas this stripe includes the same pattern that can be seen in the granite and brick along the Locust Walk down the middle.
As mentioned, the Locust Walk serves as the central artery for the West Philadelphia-based university, with academic buildings, dorms, dining halls and fraternities spanning all four blocks. It was originally a roadway but was fully converted to a pedestrian space in 1972.
