French Ligue 1 side FC Girondins de Bordeaux are marking their 140th anniversary with a limited edition kit.
Bordeaux released the kit on Saturday, Oct. 16, in anticipation of wearing it in a match against FC Nantes the next day. It is predominantly dark red, with a chevron on the chest in a light shade of gold. The chevron is a traditional element of Bordeaux’s home kits, though this one is smaller than what appears on their 2021-22 home jersey.
The anniversary kit also features an old crest that Bordeaux is in the process of phasing back into its brand. The club had adopted a new crest in June 2020 that proved to be unpopular with fans, and when new owners bought the club in 2021, they committed to restoring the old crest. However, the newer crest was still used on the 2021-22 home and away kits due to production timelines and restraints.
“On behalf of the entire Girondins family, I would like to personally thank our partner adidas for having been a centerpiece in the creation of this anniversary jersey with — as a bonus — the return to a logo loved by all. All while projecting on an exciting common project for the future,” club president Gérard Lopez said on the club’s website.
All other accents on the jersey are in light gold, including collar trim, adidas shoulder stripes, sleeve cuffs, and sponsor logos.
The dark red color is inspired by the kits Bordeaux wore in 1996, when superstars Zinedine Zidane, Christopher Dugarry and Bixente Lizarazu led the club to the UEFA Cup final (which they lost 5-1 to Bayern Munich).
A special 140th anniversary logo appears on the lower right corner on the shirt, near the hem. The jerseys are limited to a run of 1,881 and are individually numbered; the number is printed under the 140th anniversary logo.
“We are delighted to have supported the Girondins in the creation of this celebratory outfit,” adidas France brand director told the club’s website. “Adidas and Girondins de Bordeaux share the same passion for sport, we are very proud today to help write an ambitious new chapter in their history.”
BOLOGNA FC – Third
Italian Serie A side are throwing it back to the 1990s for their 2021-22 third kit. Manufactured by Macron and unveiled on Oct. 1, the kit is mainly yellow, with a blue and red sash that starts on the upper left side of the shirt and fades out as it runs under the club crest. The collar and cuffs feature blue and red trim, and the sponsor logos are blue.
The color and design harken back to the 1997-98 season, when their away kits featured a similar sash and they signed Italian legend Roberto Baggio from AC Milan.
RB LEIPZIG – Fourth
Meanwhile, in Germany, Bundesliga side RB Leipzig have turned to Nike’s teamwear catalog for a fourth jersey to compliment their 2021-22 home, away and third kits. The shirt is based on Nike’s Strike II template, and is predominantly red with monochromatic white sponsor logos and club crest. The shoulders are a brighter shade of red with a tonal pattern that resembles a fingerprint.
