Italian Serie A side AS Roma have reached into their past and brought back a beloved club crest as the centerpiece of their new 2021-22 fourth kit, manufactured by New Balance.
The club unveiled the jerseys on Wednesday, Oct. 20, just a day ahead of their UEFA Europa Conference League match against Norwegian side FK Bodø/Glimt. The shirt is navy blue, with narrow yellow and red horizontal stripes across the front.
On the left chest is a version of the club’s crest initially used from 1997 to 2013. Like the current crest, the top half depicts a female wolf with the infant brothers Romulus and Remus — iconography taken from the myth of the founding of Rome. Instead of “ROMA 1927,” though, the bottom half of the 1997-2013 crest features an interlocking “ASR” monogram.
With this crest on their shirts, AS Roma won a Serie A championship, two Coppa Italia trophies and an Italian Supercoppa. Click here for a video about the history of the AS Roma crest.
The front of the shirt also features a tonal pattern of wolves’ heads, which featured prominently in the club’s crests prior to 1997.
The back of the collar features an insert with red, orange and yellow stripes, along with a modern “AS•ROMA” wordmark. The sleeve cuffs are yellow, with red and yellow New Balance tags.
“I really like all the special details of this new kit. It’s an honour to wear a badge that means so much to everyone connected to the club and I’m sure it will get a positive reaction from the fans,” said Roma winger Stephan El Shaarawy on the club’s website.
The shorts and socks that go with the shirt are also navy blue with yellow and red accents.
While the club is labelling this as a “fourth kit,” it is only the third kit AS Roma has released for the 2021-22 season. Their home kit is the club’s signature shade of dark red, while the away kit is white with red, orange and yellow stripes on each sleeve.
