Fans of Ligue 1’s Saint-Étienne to Find Out Results of New Crest Vote This Month

Supporters of French Ligue 1 side AS Saint-Étienne will find out sometime in December the results of a recent vote on a new crest.

The club asked fans to choose between three crest options between Nov. 24 and 28, capping off a months-long collaborative redesign process. The consultation phase in September and October 2021 gave all supporters the chance to express their views on the club’s identity, and more than 12,000 took advantage. Then the club conducted workshops with 42 people — including supporters’ group representatives along with club partners, ambassadors and employees — to choose the three options that would be put to a vote.

Through the consultations and workshops, the club identified several elements that it wanted to make certain were included in any crest they put to a vote:

  1. Coat of arms or shield shape.
  2. Blue/red/white star signifying 10 French league championships.
  3. The club initials (“ASSE”).
  4. The club’s home city (“Saint-Étienne”).
  5. The year the club turned professional (1933).
  6. The club’s home department (“Loire”).
  7. Green and white stripes.

Two of the finalists also have an “enriched version” where oak and laurel branches — “symbols of strength and eternity” found in the city of Saint-Étienne’s coat of arms — are added in certain applications, while the third features the branches in all applications.

The three finalists are as follows:

Whichever crest emerges victorious from the vote will be the eighth different crest Saint-Étienne has used throughout its history. The club will officially adopt the crest at the start of the 2022-23 Ligue 1 season.
