French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain honoured one of their own over the weekend for once again being named the best player in the world with a special touch on their jerseys.
In their home match against AS Monaco on Sunday, PSG players sported gold names and numbers on the backs of their jerseys to mark Lionel Messi’s seventh Ballon D’Or title, which he won in late November.
The Ballon D’Or (or Golden Ball) is handed out each year by France Football magazine to the player voted by football writers to be the best in the world. Messi has the most all-time Ballon D’Or wins with seven, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo with five. In 2021, he narrowly beat out Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, with Chelsea midfielder Jorginho finishing third and Ronaldo in sixth spot.
PSG joined Messi in the winner’s circle, beating Monaco 2-0. Kylian Mbappé scored both goals.
While the names and numbers on the jerseys were gold, the numbers on the PSG players’ shorts remained their usual white.
