2022 NHL Draft Logo Recycles Original 2020 Design

The logo for the 2022 NHL Draft, to be held in Montreal, will recycle the design initially created for the 2020 Draft. The 2020 NHL Draft was slated to be hosted by the Montreal Canadiens in the Summer of 2020 before the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic shut down in-person events.

With a colour scheme of rouge, blanc, et bleu in honour of the host Canadiens, the logo includes a torch at the bottom of a shield; this is a nod to the Canadiens’ team motto of “To you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high.” This is a line from the poem In Flanders Fields, which has appeared in the club’s locker room since 1952 and on the inside collar of their jerseys since 2017.

We’re also seeing a return to the semi-templated style of NHL Draft logos that had been in use since 2010 before a brief break in 2021. As with all Draft logos during that span, we have “DRAFT” in bold silver italics (albeit with a new typeface this time) with the host city below and two stars to the right.

The graphic below shows this style started in 2010 before a bit of a detour during COVID times. The 2020 logo they ended up going with is the same as this year’s secondary logo.

The 2022 NHL Entry Draft, the 60th entry draft the league has held since its inception in 1963, will take place at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, over two days – July 7 to 8. The number one pick will go to the winner of the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery, which will be drawn on May 10.
