If a purported leak on Twitter is true, Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy will be without one of their signature home kit design elements for the next couple of years.
The Galaxy are due for a new home jersey in 2022, and Twitter user @philipflanagan posted several photos Thursday morning of what appears to be a replica version of what’s coming down the pike.
@philipflanagan said he found the Adidas-manufactured shirt on the racks at a Sports Direct store on Oxford Street in London, UK, and he snapped one up. The photos show a white jersey with navy blue accents, and a pattern of quasars from the Galaxy crest along the sleeve cuffs. An LA logo with the quasar appears on the back collar.
The photos were picked up and spread further by the Twitter account for Corner of the Galaxy, a weekly team-centric podcast.
If the shirt found in London is accurate, it would mark the first time since 2011 that the Galaxy do not have a diagonal sash on their home jerseys. That element was used by the club from 2003 to 2006, then ditched in 2007 after a crest redesign. The sash was reintroduced in 2012, although it was silver on the white home kit the club used in 2020 and 2021.
Also, if the leaked shirt is a replica, then it may not have the exact same elements that the authentic on-field kit will. For example, when a replica of expansion franchise Charlotte FC’s inaugural home kit showed up on store racks early, it didn’t have the same striping details on the collar as the authentic version released about a month later.
With the 2022 MLS season kicking off on Saturday, Feb. 26, jersey reveals should be coming thick and fast over the next few weeks.
