Friday Flurry of Activity Across MLS Sees 11 Teams Unveil Kits Ahead of 2022 Season

It’s been a mad rush this week for Major League Soccer teams to unveil their new jerseys in time for the 2022 season kickoff, coming up on Feb. 26. Friday marked the crest of the wave, with a total of 11 teams trotting out new looks.

Let’s take a closer look at all the kits that were revealed …

FC CINCINNATI – Away

FC Cincinnati have turned to their city’s flag for inspiration for their 2022 home kit. Dubbed the “Juncta Juvant” kit after the city’s motto (“Strength in Unity” in Latin) — which is also printed inside the collar — the kit is predominantly orange with an embossed representation of Cincinnati’s flag across the chest. Inside the embossed C of the flag is the club’s crest, rendered in silver and blue.

The crew neck collar is solid blue, while the sleeve cuffs are blue with silver trim and the Adidas shoulder stripes are silver. The jock tag (inset below) is another stylized version of the city flag, this time in blue. Names and numbers will be printed on the back in silver, and the shirt will be paired with primarily orange shorts and socks.

D.C. UNITED – Home

D.C. United is keeping things fairly simple with their 2022 home kit. The jersey features tonal vertical stripes on a black base. The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are also black, but have red stripes through the center. The Adidas logo and shoulder stripes are white. The jock tag features a graphic with red wings and the slogan “BLACK & RED” in white. A “D.C. UNITED” wordmark appears on the back collar.

D.C. United also announced Friday that they’ll have a new front-of-shirt sponsor for the 2022 season. That will be announced on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

FC DALLAS – Home

Fans of FC Dallas have been clamoring for the club to return to hoops on its home jersey, and on Friday, they were only too happy to comply. FCD’s new home kit for 2022 — dubbed the “Crescendo Kit” — is predominantly red, with navy blue hoops made up of diagonal slashes.

Navy blue panels run down the sides and under each arm. The Adidas and sponsor logos are white, while the Adidas shoulder stripes are navy blue. The sleeve cuffs are solid red, and the crew neck collar is red with navy trim. The jock tag features a logo commemorating former team owner Lamar Hunt.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY – Away

Sporting Kansas City has once again revived the “State Line” motif for its 2022 away kit. The shirt is predominantly “dark indigo,” and is embossed with a pattern of lines containing the area codes for Kansas (913) and Missouri (816), the two Kansas Cities the team represents. The embossed lines bend at an angle mirroring that of the Kansas-Missouri border, the same angle found in the club’s crest.

The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are dark indigo with light blue trim, and the Adidas logo and shoulder stripes are light blue. The back collar contains a graphic (inset below) honoring two significant pieces of local architecture, one from each side of the state line: a shuttlecock for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Rosedale Memorial Arch in Kansas City, Kansas.

The front of the shirt features the logo of new primary sponsor Compass Minerals.

LOS ANGELES FOOTBALL CLUB – Home

The glitz and glamour of Los Angeles’ art deco architecture shines through in Los Angeles Football Club’s new home kit for 2022. The predominantly black kit features a tonal art deco pattern all over the front and sleeves. The gold Adidas logo and club crest are centered on the chest. The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are black with gold trim. “LOS ANGELES” is spelled out in gold across the back collar.

The jersey unveiled Friday matches up with leaked photos that were posted to Reddit last week. Those photos also showed black shorts with gold accents, as well as gold printing on the back of the shirt.

MINNESOTA UNITED – Home

Minnesota United are going even darker for their 2022 home kit. Their traditional grey home uniforms are now black, with tonal pinstripes across the front and sleeves. The V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs are solid black with light blue trim, while the Adidas logo and shoulder stripes are solid light blue. The six-pointed star from the crest appears on the back collar in light blue, and the state motto of Minnesota, “L’Étoile du Nord,” is printed on the neck tape.

CF MONTREAL – Away

CF Montreal has stuck with grey for their new 2022 away kit, but have added a blue marble pattern across the front and sleeves. “The streaks that run through the silver jersey evoke the blue that courses through the veins of all the Club’s supporters from the very beginning,” according to the club’s website. It bears a resemblance to Premier League side Arsenal’s away kit from the 2020-21 season.

The V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs are both solid black with grey trim, and the Adidas logo and shoulder stripes are black. The back collar features the City of Montreal’s floral emblem in black. The jock tag features the club slogan “DROIT DEVANT” (“Straight Ahead”) and two arrows. Names and numbers will be printed on the back in black. Photos posted to the team’s Twitter account show the shirt paired with shorts that appear to be a slightly darker shade of grey with black trim; unfortunately the socks are not visible.

NASHVILLE SC – Home

Nashville SC is turning the volume up with their 2022 home kit. The shirt is predominantly yellow, with navy blue panels that run down the sides and under each arm. Inside each side panel is a pattern mimicking a sound wave, which also includes the ‘N’ from the club crest. The V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs are navy blue with yellow trim, while the Adidas logo, shoulder stripes and sponsor logos are all navy blue.

The jock tag (inset below) features a graphic representation of Nashville SC’s new stadium, which is set to open May 1. On the back collar, the exact latitude and longitude coordinates of the center circle at the new stadium flank the ‘N’ from the crest.

NEW YORK CITY FC – Away

Like a bolt of lightning from the sky, defending MLS Cup champions New York City FC have gone with a bold choice for their new 2022 away kit. The shirt is predominantly orange, with a navy blue thunderbolt down the center. On the left side, under the shirt, a gradient faced from orange to navy blue following the shape the thunderbolt.

The sleeves and back are orange, while the Adidas logo, shoulder stripes and sponsor logo are white. The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are orange with navy blue trim. The “NYC” monogram from the club crest appears on the back collar inside a navy blue square. The jock tag features “New York City FC” written out in a white script font. Names and numbers will be printed on the back in white.

As MLS Cup champions, both NYCFC’s home and away kits will have a special silver MLS badge on the left sleeve.

ORLANDO CITY – Away

Orlando City is catching some rays with their 2022 away kit. The base of the jersey is white, with purple rays emanating from the bottom of the shirt that face to yellow then white as they go up. The crew neck collar is purple with white trim, while the sleeve cuffs are solid purple, as are the Adidas logo and shoulder stripes. The jock tag (inset below) features a silhouette of the team’s stadium in front of the Orlando skyline at sunset, while an outline of the sun/lion’s mane from the club crest appears on the back collar.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES – Away

The San Jose Earthquakes’ 2022 away kit is a stark black-and-light-grey jersey unveiled at an event Friday morning. The base of the kit is light grey, and panels that run down the sides and under each arm feature alternating black converging vertical and diagonal line patterns.

All the logos are black, including the club crest and the Adidas shoulder stripes. The back collar features a graphic with “SAN JOSE” spelled out in a gothic blackletter font inside a black rectangle. Printed inside the collar is “La Unión hace la Fuerza” (“Unity Creates Strength”).
