French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais showed their true colours when they broke out a new fourth kit over the weekend.
The club debuted the new kits in a Ligue 1 match against Olympique Marseille on Sunday, May 1. The shirts are mainly royal blue, with red halftone gradient stripes made up of parallelograms across the front. There are red diagonal panels under the arms, gold trim around the blue V-neck collar, and gold Adidas shoulder stripes. Sponsor logos on the chest, sleeve, upper back and lower back are all printed in gold.
Promotional material for the kit launch (as seen below) included the slogan: “Rouge et bleu sont nos couleurs, Lyonnais est notre coeur” (“Red and blue are our colours, Lyon is our heart”). Some of the product launch photos showed this slogan printed on the lower right front of the jersey, near the hem, but it did not appear on the shirts worn in Sunday’s match. The red, blue and gold colours are taken from the city of Lyon’s coat of arms.
The back of the kit is mostly solid blue to allow for legibility of names and numbers, though small portions of the halftone pattern are visible near the hem.
The shorts are solid blue, with gold Adidas stripes down each side and a wide red panel around the back of each leg. In the game, the logo of sponsor Teddy Smith, a clothing brand, appeared on the left leg.
The socks are blue with red cuffs. Gold Adidas stripes are included in the cuff, and a gold Adidas logo appears on the front.
The new kits worked well for Lyon, as they defeated Marseille 3-0 on Sunday. The win moved them into 7th place in Ligue 1, keeping a spot in European competition within reach with three games left to play.
The jerseys are marked “22-23” in Olympique Lyonnais’s online store, meaning they’re likely to be used again in some fashion next season.
