Puma, La Liga Hope New Match Ball for 2022-23 Season is Out of This World

Spain’s La Liga and their manufacturing partner Puma are hoping that the new ball produced for the 2022-23 season is out of this world.

Puma and La Liga launched the Orbita match ball on Wednesday, May 25, which will be used in matches in Spain’s top division starting in August. The ball is mainly white, with large, jagged black shapes outlined in fuchsia all over. In between those black shapes are smaller shapes with yellow and teal coloring. The Puma logo appears in yellow, with a darker yellow drop shadow.

The graphic design of the ball is meant to evoke “the hypnotic effect of a kaleidoscope,” according to SoccerBible.

The Orbita model is constructed using 12 star-shaped panels, which reduce the number of seams and allow for better connection with the ball. The surface is made of 3D-textured polyurethane foam that improves aerodynamics and resists wear and tear. Inside, the rubber bladder and Puma Air Lock valve optimize air retention and rebound properties.

Puma is also rumored to be producing an Orbita model for Italy’s Serie A next season, ending that league’s 15-year match ball relationship with Nike. That ball should be unveiled in the coming weeks.
