The storm clouds forming over North Carolina will be even more black than usual during the 2022-23 hockey season.
Thanks to reliable sources, SportsLogos.Net can confirm that the Carolina Hurricanes will wear their black third uniforms as their primary home uniform during the upcoming NHL season. The Hurricanes had worn red as their primary dark uniform colour since they moved on down from Connecticut back in 1997.
We shouldn’t be too surprised by this news as the Hurricanes certainly did not try to hide their affinity for the black uniform.

Since it was first introduced as the third uniform in 2018, the ‘Canes had picked their black outfit over their usual reds for every Stanley Cup Playoff home game. Last season, the ‘Canes experimented with more black in their set when they wore black pants with their white tops in Buffalo on April 5, then again with the home reds (and matching black helmets) back in Raleigh on April 7.
When this black uniform was first unveiled, Hurricanes President and General Manager Don Waddell said the club “wanted to modernize our old alternate uniform” while also “incorporating a sense of regional pride,” adding, “we feel we’ve done that with this design.”
The uniform incorporates a “ghosted” State of North Carolina flag on one shoulder, and a Hurricanes logo on the other placed upon a “storm grey” shoulder yoke. The logo on the chest, an update on the club’s original storm warning flag logo, was corrected to include two square red-and-black flags instead of one; two flags are the proper indicator for hurricanes, while a single flag indicates a mere tropical storm. The negative space between the two flags forms the shape of the map of North Carolina.
As for last season’s home red design, I’ve been told it will not be worn by the team in 2022-23, only that it will be replaced by something “special.” Indeed, something to look forward to there.
