Ecuador’s national football team will be taking a little bit of their home country with them when they take part in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar this November and December.
The Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol (FEF) and manufacturer Marathon launched the new kits the team will wear in Qatar on Thursday, Aug. 25. The home, away and third kits all feature several symbols of Ecuador and its people.
The home kit is predominantly yellow, with a tonal diagonal herringbone pattern across the front. The navy blue crew neck collar has a notch on each side, and red trim along the front half. Solid blue blocks appear on the shoulders. The side panels are blue, red and yellow. The back half of each sleeve cuff is navy blue while the front half is yellow; the halves are separated by blocks of yellow, blue and red that mirror the Ecuadorian flag.
Printed inside the collar of all three kits is a graphic representing the four different regions of Ecuador: the Pacific coast, the Galápogos Islands, the Andes mountains and the Amazon jungle. Another graphic (see below) shown on Marathon’s web store uses the same motifs, but given the shape, it may be printed inside the shirt, on the back side of the crest.
The back collar of all three kits features an outline of Ecuador with the latitudinal coordinates of the Equator, which runs through the country: 0° 0′ 0″.
The name of the country is printed in six different languages inside the back hem of each jersey. “Six ways to get to know each other, but only one to feel Ecuadorian,” reads the description of the shirt on Marathon’s web store (translated to English by Google).
The away kit is navy blue and features a tonal geometric pattern on the front, possibly inspired by the ancient Incan people who once inhabited the area. The trim around the front of the collar is white, as are the front halves of the sleeve cuffs, which still have the Ecuadorian flag as a divider. The national team crest appears in monochromatic silver.
Ecuador’s third kit is predominantly white, with tonal vertical stripes on the front. Like the home kit, the collar and shoulder blocks are solid navy blue, with red trim on the collar. Stripes down the sides are navy blue. Unlike the other two kits, the sleeve cuffs on the third kit appear to be solid navy blue, with fine details in the colours of the Ecuadorian flag.
Ecuador is the only nation outfitted by Marathon that will participate in the 2022 World Cup.
Ecuador is in Group A of the World Cup along with hosts Qatar, the Netherlands and Senegal. They will play Qatar in the opening match of the tournament on Sunday, Nov. 20, at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.
