“On a journey to greatness, it’s crucial to remember and appreciate where you started.”
The Houston Rockets this morning unveiled their new white, green, and gold Hardwood Classic Edition uniforms they’ll be wearing on occasion in 2022-23 in celebration of the 55th anniversary of their franchise.
Houston will be wearing throwbacks to their inaugural season of 1967-68 when the club played in San Diego. The jersey is white with “ROCKETS” arched across the chest in gold with a green drop shadow; a green/white/gold pattern trim around the collar and each arm.
The shorts are white with three comically large stripes running around the waist.
“To paint the full picture of this rich Rockets history, you’ll have to go back to the very beginning,” said Houston rapper Tobe Nwigwe while narrating today’s unveil video from the team. “That thread wasn’t always red. In 1967, gold didn’t signify two championships, and green wasn’t just the last name of a star in the making. Those were the colours of a new NBA franchise surrounded by palm trees in sunny San Diego.”
The Rockets didn’t switch to their familiar red and gold until the franchise relocated east to Houston in 1971; the Rockets stuck with red and gold until 1995, swapping out the gold for navy blue immediately following back-to-back titles.
As a “Classic Edition” uniform, the Rockets will only be wearing this for a single season. Houston joins several teams, including Golden State, Detroit, and Milwaukee, as those wearing throwback threads in 2022-23.
