Italian Serie A side AS Roma have included a fun new feature on the replica versions of their new third kit: a morphing crest.
The club unveiled the new kits on Thursday, just prior to the men’s team taking the pitch wearing them in their Europa League matchup against Finnish club HJK Helsinki.
As seen in the Twitter video below, depending on the angle of viewing, the crest on the replica version of the kit morphs from an “ASR” monogram in a circle — a crest the club last used on kits in 1960 — to a crest similar to the one used between 2000 and 2013.
On AS Roma’s official online store, the listing for the replica version of the kit reads:
“This version of the 2022-23 AS Roma third jersey features a beautiful detail that gives it uniqueness and originality: the crest applied on the chest is a double reflection image. Depending on the angle from which you look at it, it shows the ASR logo or the classic crest with the she-wolf. A special feature found only on this variant of the new third jersey, which will delight fans and collectors alike.”
The listing for the “elite” authentic version makes no mention of the crest, and photos from Thursday’s game showed the “ASR” crest visible at every angle shown. UEFA and FIFA rules would almost certainly outlaw a morphing crest in game action.
The front and sleeves of the kit itself are covered in a black, grey and pink “interweaving of modern shapes [that] reflects the fierce loyalty of Roma’s wolf pack.” The crew neck collar is solid black, and the broad black sleeve cuffs contain a pink vertical stripe bordered in white.
The back of the kit is solid black for legibility of names and numbers. Those are printed in pink with white outlines.
The shorts that pair with the jersey are black with pink stripes down the sides. The socks are also black with pink vertical stripes on the sides.
The new kits worked for AS Roma on Thursday, as they defeated HJK Helsinki 3-0.
