Phoenix Suns Bring Back Black “PHX” Uniforms for 2022-23

The Phoenix Suns are bringing back a black “PHX” uniform for 2022-23.

For the first time since 2019, the Suns will wear the abbreviated name for their city across a uniform; the new Jordan-branded “Statement Edition” was released this morning by the club via their social media channels.

The uniform is black with “PHX” arched across the front in white, trimmed in a sunset, almost-pixelated gradient. This pattern is replicated throughout the uniform — on the player numbers, front and back; the striping around the neck and each arm, and the thin piping running up the sides of the jersey.

With the addition of the new uniform to the Suns’ set, the club has removed their orange uniform, which had served as their “Statement Edition” option since the 2019-20 season. The all-orange uniform featured the club’s shooting-sun logo in the middle of the chest with the player’s number centred below.

“The sunset gradient … pays homage to iconic Arizona sunsets and “The Valley” City Edition uniform worn by the Suns the past two seasons,” said the team via their website, also adding, “the new Nike Statement Edition uniform capture Phoenix’s vibrant colours, cityscape, and community.”

The uniform was designed by the Phoenix Suns’ in-house creative team, Centercourt Creative. As a “statement Edition” uniform, it will be worn for multiple seasons; we’ve heard previously (but cannot confirm) that Statement uniforms must be kept for at least three seasons.

Phoenix will wear the new uniform for their 2022-23 season opener against the Dallas Mavericks on October 19. It joins the team’s “Classic Edition” 1990s throwback uniform as new wardrobe options for the Suns this season as the club celebrates the 30th anniversary of the debut of the fondly-remembered streaking-sun uniforms.

This Phoenix Suns orange Statement uniform is now history, worn from 2019-2022
