Monday night’s matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers will be the third in San Francisco since Los Angeles unveiled its current uniform set in 2020. Yet, none of them have featured the Rams in their standard road uniforms and the 49ers in their standard home set.
Instead, Los Angeles wore all-blue in a 24-16 loss on the road in 2020, as San Francisco donned the road version of its 1994 throwback uniforms on Sunday Night Football. The Rams then wore their “modern throwback” jerseys with blue pants in a 31-10 loss in 2021, when the 49ers wore the home version of their 1994 throwback uniforms on Monday Night Football.
Tonight’s matchup will mirror the latter, though the Rams have since promoted their “modern throwback” jersey to full-time road status and relegated the bone-colored jersey and pants to alternates. They are 2-3 overall in the white jerseys, including a victory in Super Bowl LVI, but 2-2 when worn with sol (yellow) pants and 0-1 when worn with blue pants.
The 49ers, meanwhile, are 2-2 in the home version of their 1994 throwback uniforms – which feature drop shadows numbers, three sleeve stripes and white pants – since they were introduced in 2021. The only difference from last year’s look is the diamond-shaped 75th anniversary patch on the left shoulder, which will not appear this evening.
San Francisco also went 2-0 against Los Angeles during the uniform’s original run in 1994, when the league celebrated its 75th season. The uniforms were based on what the 49ers looked like in 1955 and ended up being a good luck charm of sorts, as they wore them through the playoffs on the way to a victory over the then-San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX.
Tonight’s game between the Rams and 49ers will kick off at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN.
