Marvel, MiLB Team Up for Series of 96 New Team Logos and Uniforms

Minor League Baseball and Marvel Entertainment announced the launch of the first batch of logos belonging to Marvel’s Defenders of the Diamond series, a collection of special Minor League Baseball team logos and uniforms.

The designs, all created by Marvel, will be worn on-field at least once per season by 96 different Minor League Baseball clubs in 2023 and 2024. The various logos will be unveiled in batches between today and mid-November, with the merchandise launch (including in-game caps) set for November 18, 2022.

“When you combine the creative power of these two storied brands, the promotions, events, and now merchandise fans will see in ballparks and retail stores in the years ahead will create memories that will be passed from generation to generation,” said Kurt Hunzeker, Major League Baseball’s Vice President of Minor League Business Operations in the press release. “We are beyond excited to share these new team-specific logos and characters Marvel created as we build excitement for the 2023 baseball season.”

Today’s launch includes the special logos for the Buffalo Bisons, Hartford Yard Goats, Durham Bulls, Somerset Patriots, Lansing Lugnuts, Midland RockHounds, El Paso Chihuahuas, and the Stockton Ports. Tomorrow will see eight more clubs: the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Syracuse Mets, Jersey Shore BlueClaws, Indianapolis Indians, South Bend Cubs, Toledo Mud Hens, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, and the Rocket City Trash Pandas join the superhero party. A full list of all 96 teams can be found at the bottom of this post.

As part of the program, Marvel has also created a “Marvel’s Defenders of the Diamond” comic book series for Minor League Baseball fans that will be distributed across participating Minor League ballparks over the next two seasons.

This post will be updated throughout the day to show the logos as they are released.

MiLB Marvel’s Defenders of the Diamond Logos

BUFFALO BISONS

BUFFALO BISONS MiLB Marvel's Defenders of the Diamond Logo

The Buffalo Bisons Marvel logo shows a brown bison or buffalo head with two white horns facing the viewer while wearing a baby blue baseball cap with a navy blue “B” on the crown. The Bison and its baby blue eyes looks justifiably annoyed as it’s covered with at least an inch of snow on its horns, the visor of its ballcap, and snout as several white icicles form around the bottom of its beard.

HARTFORD YARD GOATS

Higher, further, faster is how the Yard Goats described their new Marvel logo. The design shows the team’s grey goat mascot with gold horns and eyes in a pose suggesting it’s about to leap into the air. The goat is wearing a green and blue bodysuit with a flowing grey cape and a large white “H” on its chest on a blue circle.

DURHAM BULLS

Durham Bulls Mavel's Defenders of the Diamond Series Logo

Marvel went with a traditional superhero look for the Durham Bulls. The brown-coloured bull with white horns is wearing a blue baseball cap and a white baseball jersey while posing with its arms on its hips. The smiling, cartoon-like bull is holding a blue shield with a bronze “D” on the front, and, naturally, a blue cape is shown flowing behind it.

SOMERSET PATRIOTS

Somerset Patriots MiLB Marvel's Defenders of the Diamond logo

The Somerset Patriots Marvel logo shows the blue and silver patriotic figure from their usual logo, still wearing its tricorne hat but now full-bodied. It’s shown holding a baseball bat ready to swing, five white stars in an arch on its sleeve with, of course, a flowing red cap behind.

LANSING LUGNUTS

For the Lugnuts, Marvel’s designers wiped the goofy grin off the face of the Lansing Lugnuts primary logo and replaced it with something a little more serious. The design shows a silver lug bolt with black trim and light blue highlights with white and blue lightning all around the base of it and the entire logo outlined in red.

MIDLAND ROCKHOUNDS

Rockhounds? More like rock… mounds? Marvel’s Midland Rockhounds logo shows a pile of grey rocks with navy blue details which slightly resemble facial features. At the base of the rock are two orange pickaxes and baseball bats.

EL PASO CHIHUAHUAS

Here’s one teeny tiny pooch you shouldn’t want to mess with. The El Paso Chihuahuas Marvel logo shows a beige-coloured chihuahua with red eyes, baring its white teeth with a red spiked collar around its neck. There’s so much anger from this pup that flames have appeared around its head.

STOCKTON PORTS

The last logo to be revealed on day one belongs to the Stockton Ports, who give us a tattooed sailor wielding a giant piece of asparagus. Without context, it’s a little unusual, but with context… it’s still a little unusual. So basically, the City of Stockton is the asparagus capital of the world; they even hold an asparagus festival every year (the smell from the portapotties after an event like that…). There’s a whole story behind the Ports and their asparagus logos, our Paul Caputo did a great piece on it a few years ago which you should check out here.

Anyways, that’s it for today. Eight more to come tomorrow.
