The 2022 Major League Baseball Postseason is fully underway, so it’s time to start thinking about which World Series we’d like to see.
As of the start of the Postseason, there are 36potential pairings. As history marches forward, thirty-five of these will look very unusual placed next to this season’s double-pennant Fall Classic logo, and just one will go down cemented in the memories of two fanbases and those obsessed with memorizing World Series results over the years.
Here are the 36 possible World Series matchups as of the start of the Postseason:
Several possible World Series rematches here, including the last two Fall Classics (2021’s Astros/Braves and 2020’s Rays/Dodgers), the 2000 Subway Series (Mets/Yankees), both of the previous Blue Jays’ appearances in the World Series could happen again (Phillies, Braves), same with the Rays who also could pair up again with Philadelphia (or the previously noted Dodgers). The Padres could find themselves again playing in the Bronx, as they did in 1998, and the Braves could again face the Yankees, Blue Jays, Astros, or Cleveland. How about another Dodgers/Astros World Series? That would be all sorts of interesting, or let’s look much further back in history and maybe add yet another Dodgers/Yankees or Cardinals/Yankees matchup.
I’ll update this post as the postseason progresses; crossing off all those matchups that are no longer possible as teams bite the dust along the way. In the meantime, share the matchups you’d like to see in the comments below!
FIRST UPDATE!
After the Wild Card round, we’ve lost twenty possible matchups; there are now just 16 potential 2022 World Series pairings left. Here they are:
SECOND UPDATE!
In the LDS round, the National League lost its top two teams while the American League kept theirs. Houston, New York, Philadelphia, and San Diego move on to the League Championship Series and leave us with only FOUR possible 2022 World Series matchups.
Both the Phillies and Padres faced (and lost) to the Yankees in their most recent World Series appearance (Phillies 2009, Padres 1998), so if New York tops Houston, no matter what, you’ll see a team eager for revenge… and if Houston wins, as always, it’ll sound like a mid-week regular season series from 2007.
FINAL UPDATE:
Alright, hands up, who had Phillies-Astros on your original scorecard? The 2022 World Series is set! Thanks for following along. Come back for 2023 when we start all over again:
