Bayern Munich Mark 50th Anniversary of Olympiastadion with Special Edition Kit

Bundesliga powerhouses Bayern Munich are celebrating the anniversary of a German sporting landmark — and their former home — with a special edition kit.

2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Munich Olympiastadion. With its unique shape and architecture, the stadium remains an iconic legacy of the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich.

Bayern’s special edition kit, made by Adidas and released on Friday, celebrates the architecture and legacy of the Olympiastadion. “The design of the jersey is inspired by the unmistakable tented roof of the world-famous Munich landmark and incorporates colourful accents from the surroundings of the venue where the German record champions enjoyed so much success from 1972 to 2005 and developed into a top international club,” according to FCBayern.com.

The base of the kit is off-white, with a tonal wavy grid pattern. Overtop of that are streaks of color — blue-grey, orange, teal and yellow — representing the stadium roof and also mimicking the logo for the 1972 Olympics.

The V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs are black, while the Adidas shoulder stripes are orange. The club crest and sponsor logos are monochromatic black and centred on the chest.

On the back of the jersey, special orange numbers exclusive to this kit feature a map of the Olympic Park drawn in blue. Player names and the club name are navy blue, as is the year “1972” on the back collar.

The shorts and socks that go with the kit are also off-white with orange Adidas stripes. The socks have the year “1972” across the front.

Bayern Munich played in the Olympiastadion until 2005, at which time they moved into the Allianz Arena.

In Friday’s announcement, the club didn’t specify in which, if any, upcoming matches they would this new kit.

UPDATE (Wednesday, Oct. 19): Bayern Munich broke out the Olympiastadion kits today for their DFB-Pokal match against FC Augsburg. However, the match kits had solid navy numbers rather than the orange numbers containing the map of Olympic Park seen above.
