The Denver Broncos announced on Wednesday they will wear blue pants with white jerseys for the first time in franchise history when they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in London this Sunday (9:30 a.m. ET on ESPN+).
“There was an opportunity to meet with our captains and just learn about what we can do to make things better from their perspective,” Broncos president Damani Leech said. “We got on the topic of uniforms, which – if you don’t know – is a multi-year process to actually change from a league standpoint.
“That was one thing they pointed out they had not been able to do and wanted the opportunity to do it. And we said, ‘Well, look, we’re going to London. They drive on the opposite side of the road (so) we can flip our pants and see how it goes.”
The Broncos have only worn white pants on the road with their current uniform set, which debuted in 1997, and they’ve only deviated from that look twice, as they donned their all-orange Color Rush uniforms on the road against the San Diego Chargers in 2016 and Indianapolis Colts in 2017.
The blue pants, meanwhile, have only been worn as part of Denver’s all-blue alternate uniform, which made its regular-season debut in 2003. They feature orange side panels, matching the Broncos’ alternate blue jersey, which was actually their primary top until 2012.
“I know a lot of guys love the blue on blue that we get to wear or even the blue jerseys with white pants,” safety Justin Simmons said. “We wear these in practice a lot, and depending on who’s wearing the white jerseys, guys notice.
“(Russell Wilson) and some of the others guy noticed that, ‘Hey, those look pretty good. Is there a chance we can make that happen?’ They asked around, and I guess they made it happen. (We’re) going to wear them on Sunday and I’m excited. I think it’ll be cool.”
The Broncos have mostly worn white pants on the road throughout their history, with the exceptions being brown pants from 1960-61 and throwback games during the 2009 season, as well as orange pants from 1968-71 and 1978-79.
Jacksonville, meanwhile, will counter with an all-black look. The Jaguars have black jerseys and black pants in all eight of their previous trips to London, going 4-4 in those contests, though the first five instances involved their black-to-gold gradient helmet.
