The Cleveland Browns have made a subtle change to their helmets for Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens (4:30 p.m. ET on NFL Network), swapping out their usual brown facemasks for white.
The Browns initially wore white facemasks from 1975-95, as well as upon their return as an expansion franchise from 1999-2005. They then switched to a gray facemask in 2006 as part of their 60th anniversary celebration, a look that remained through the 2014 season.
Cleveland moved to a brown facemask in 2015 when it unveiled new uniforms and updated its primary logo to reflect the change. That remained when the Browns returned to a classic look in 2020, though they wore a gray facemask three times last season as part of their 1946 throwback uniforms.
The white facemasks bring to mind several notable eras of Cleveland football, including the “Kardiac Kids” of the 1979-80 seasons. The Browns will also wear their brown jerseys with orange pants on Saturday as another nod to those teams.
